Scientific or graphing calculator? What should students buy

As your children grow older the school supply list will get shorter but not necessarily cheaper.

One item that may cause sticker shock to parents of high and middle school students is a specially designed calculator. Most schools prefer students to are provided with their own personal scientific calculator. In the most rigorous math classes, like AP Calculus A graphing calculator may be required.

What is the difference? A scientific calculator is able to perform functions in addition, subtraction division and multiplication. A scientific calculator usually has special buttons for parentheses, trigonometric calculations, exponents reverses, and pi among others.

A graphing calculator does even more. It has a bigger screen, allowing you to enter a formula, after which you can see a graph for it.

The Best Purchase's Geek Squad agent Derek Meister states that scientific calculatorscan run anywhere from $10 to $60. Calculators that graph are generally priced more, ranging from $80 to $150.Should students who are back in school purchase the scientific and graphing calculators? (KOMO News)

However, Best Buy says you may not actually have to purchase one, and suggests talking to your school first.

Harmony Weinberg, Edmonds School District's media and public relations supervisor She tells KOMO News each individual school sets its own policy.

"For higher level classes, like AP Calculus, it is often expected that students have a handheld graphing calculator, such as TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89."

These types of calculators can be used for AP testing. Weinberg adds that schools have a system to allow students to access calculators, like they do text books , if they're unable or prefer not to purchase their own.

For the Edmonds school district calculators are used in the same way as textbooks, namely, they are not subject to damages or losses, however, they do not have a fee to use.

Another possibility could have a laptop from their school. Weinberg says that in Edmonds "all students have access to scientific and graphing calculators through their district-issued Chromebook." The district also encourages teachers and teachers to use Desmos online calculators, since they are utilized in state-wide assessments as well.

SEATTLE - A family in West Seattle say their young son was told to stay home when they came in contact with people who had been tested positive for COVID-19. It prompted the family to claim that he was singled out and was treated differently by officials from the school district because the child was not vaccine-free..

Last week, the 12-year-old student who attends Denny International Middle School was exposed to a student in class who was diagnosed with COVID-19.

Officials at his school instructed him to stay home for two weeks because they did not believe he was vaccinated.

His relatives said they have recently learned that had he been vaccinated, the 7th grader would not be compelled to miss classes as long as he didn't show evidence of the virus.

"My kid has no symptoms," said Jeremy Gollyhorn, the boy's father. "He's perfectly healthy. What's the reason he can't just take a negative COVID test and return to school?"

Gollyhorn told reporters that his son was being kept to a higher standard than students who have had their shots, and even in the event that he failed a COVID-19 result, the child wouldn't be allowed back to school after the two week quarantine is complete.

However, those close to them who are fully vaccinated with no symptoms are not required to stay in quarantine. They can go back to school, but they are urged to get tested three-to-five days later to confirm.

Gollyhorn declared it to be absurd and makes no sense.

"Vaccinated people can still spread COVID too so what's the difference there?" said the doctor. explained.

A spokesperson stated that Seattle Public Schools is following the public health guidelines established through the federal government.

Gollyhorn stated that the policy strips individuals of the freedom to choose. He also said that his family isn't convinced by the vaccines and such situations can only motivate him to resist.

In the year since Seattle Public Schools started the school year on Sept. 1, the district has reported 117 positive COVID-19 cases and Denny International Middle School has reported four positive cases during the span of four days.

It's not clear how many staff or students have been instructed to remain in quarantine because of exposures. However, those absences are considered excused.
